War taking place? Of all refugees dying at border
crossings globally more than half dies at the border with the EU. Border control is becoming militarised.
But for migrants and refugees border crossings are still more a (organised) gamble they are not a warring party. They are armed only with the desire to improve living standards and escape poverty and misery and are confronted by arms and control equipment during those efforts.
This week the Dutch Parliament discussed the acquisition of four new large out-of-are diesel submarines (expected cost € 2.5-5 bn.). Even those are useful to map smuggle routes of arms, drugs and refugees, it is said. But is the tragedy the result of people wanting to use their freedom to move or because of the restrictions? (See e.g. Violent Borders; refugees and the right to move, by Reece Jones).
